As it is the networking silly season and you’re no doubt out and about at end-of-year events and Christmas parties, it pays to project your “paparazzi” best.
With visual images everywhere, while attending any Christmas party or social event, there may be a chance that you’ll be photographed and be in the spotlight. Now if you are not on the so called A list don’t expect to be photographed by the media or promoters but as an executive or entrepreneur there is a possibility of being seen, photographed and profiled.
Your personal brand and image is always on show, so to help you navigate the “photo opportunity” take note of this checklist.
My first tip is to Stand Out. You want to look good. Stay true to your signature style, so that you are comfortable; but, if you can, accent your style with either colour or a signature piece such as an amazing necklace, earrings, scarf or fabulous tie. In a sea of dark suits and black dresses a pop of colour in a blazer or top can work really well. It will also capture the photographer’s eye as they are tuned into colourful, striking visual images.
Start Out early. Being photographed means being in the right place at the right time. Arrive at a time when the photographers are snapping away shots of the people coming through the door. Even arrive a little early and mingle outside the event before the doors open. It the invitation says 5.15 for a 5.30 start – make sure you are there at 5.15.
Get Out. Accept all the invitations that are sent to you if you can. Even if you are busy finishing that final report, it sometimes makes good business sense to go to an event. Building your personal brand and networking go hand in hand. You want to be seen as someone who joins in with style and good manners which also means that you don’t ask the photographer to take your photo. Wait to be invited. If they’ve taken your photo before its fine to thank them and speak to him or her. There’s nothing wrong with networking with them but do remember they are there to work also.
Help Out. You can arrange to take a selfie of you or one of your friends with either the organiser or perhaps speaker or special guest and publish it on social media using the right hashtags and handles to help showcase the event and yourself. It’s not about being manipulative but can be useful if you help promote the event through your social media channels and perhaps over time that may help you become well known and invited to more social events in the future,
Most importantly, enjoy yourself, smile … and maybe we will see the real you shine in the spotlight
